New wood - coup 3

1997

An unusal inclusion in this woodland is the Wild Service or Chequer tree (Sorbus torminalis) here showing deep autumn colour. Normally found on more acidic soils some 25 whips were included in the planting to provide biodiversity and interest to the project.

Beech in the foreground are prominent in this winter view. In the planting scheme as a whole, beech was restricted to just 5%. Suffering from summer drought and squirrel damage, beech is no longer a favoured tree for woodland planting.

Coup 3 adjoining one of the rides and illustrating the extent of recent growth. With 2 metre spacing between the trees the competitve arable weeds that restricted early tree growth are now almost completely shaded out and resultant growth is more vigorous.
