New wood - coup 6

1994

The new wood shortly after planting in April 1994. Tree spacing was at a maximum of 2 metres with species being "grouped" together to facilitate thinning.

1996
Autumn 1996, the young trees following a very dry summer in an compacted ex-arable field. Weed control around the trees is evident and mowing of the weeds between the rows was carried out using a compact tractor. Evident at this stage was the future burden that old man's beard would become.

2003
January 2003 and tree growth in the new wood is now strong. Walking between the rows is difficult and a woodland environment is developing with some trees approaching 20 feet in height.

Senecio greyii (old man's beard) is now rampant on the woodland floor having spread in from the adjoining hedgerow. Despite its invasive nature, old man's beard provides a colourful interest to the otherwise drab form of winter.
